Frequently Asked Questions
What is the schedule for the summer camp?
Please check with the registrar for the exact schedule, as it will change from year to year, however certain things stay the same. There are two one-month camp sessions. Any child is welcome to do both months as the sessions are not the same and there is enough fun for the whole summer. The first camp session usually runs from the end of June to the end of July, and the second session from the end of July to the end of August.
How does my child get to summer camp?
Since this camp is a boarding school, your child stays the whole one or two months with us on the campus. If your child is from out of state, coordinate with the registrar to have your child fly into the Albuquerque airport during the prearranged time that we have our camp vans at the airport. We will pick up your child at the airport and bring him or her to the camp. This airport pick up is only done on the first day of camp and then we return them to the airport at the end of the camp session. For children who fly unaccompanied, we will pick them up directly at their gate so that they come right off the plane and to us without having to wander the airports alone.
The registrar can explain to you exact details on airport pick-ups and drop-offs if you need more. If you live in New Mexico you are welcome to bring your child to our camp as early as noon or as late as 5:00 pm on the first day of camp and pick your child up as early as 9:00 am or as late as 2:00 pm on the last day. If you would rather, you could also meet us at the Albuquerque airport when we pick up the out-of-state children. We will provide a cell phone number of one of the drivers and you can contact them for a meeting place at the airport to turn over your child.

What classroom programs are available during Summer Camp?
The mornings that we are on the campus, our classrooms are open and we deliver the Summer Life Basics program to all the summer students. If they need some help with their studies at school, we can also help provide that as well in our Educational Repair classroom.
The Summer Life Basics program is a shortened version of our Life Basics program that is available year-round. It generally consists of Communication drills, classes on making friends, getting along with people and family, exchange and responsibility. There are many other points that it could include depending on your child and the interview they will receive when they first come into our classrooms. If a child has a particular point in life that they feel they could use help on, we will address that as best we can.
What activities are available at camp?
In the afternoons that we are on campus we have a wide variety of activities available on different days. Such activities include archery, horseback riding, basketball, skateboarding, arts and crafts, dancing, music, hiking and small-group camping.
We plan different off-campus trips every year, however we generally include a trip to the Catwalk Natural Waterfalls, which is a beautiful national forest and river area with waterfalls, underwater caves and swimming holes, trips to local ghost towns and a trip to the Very Large Array, just 20 miles from our campus.
Additionally we have two large camping trips, one during each month session. The July trip is a five-day camping trip near Taos, New Mexico where we have two days available for white-water rafting (a half-day rafting trip and a full-day rafting trip) and water activities, exploring and other camp fun! The August trip is an eight-day camping trip at the Grand Canyon National Park! Those students who are physically able and pass a series of hiking and exercise tests will be allowed to do the three-day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back! Younger kids or kids who do not want to do the hike or are not up to it physically will stay up at the top and engage in a series of fun lessons, explorations, trips around the Grand Canyon, sightseeing and nightly campfires (campfire storytelling and marshmallow cooking available on some nights too!). There is no lack of things to do at the Grand Canyon and even at the end of the trip no one gets it all done.
What if the current schedule for camp does not work with my child’s schedule?
Please speak to your Registrar about this, as we can sometimes arrange different dates that your child attends depending on the circumstance. Also see next question.
Can my child attend for less than one month?
If you are local or can arrange transportation for your child, meaning you can bring your child to our campus and pick your child up again, then you can arrange your child to stay for a shorter length of time. Please speak to the Registrar about this and she will help you pick the best dates.
