My son can now read again

“When J. came out of a private school in academic year 98/99 he was in 2nd grade and reading at 4th grade level. I home schooled him the next year, then put him in public school the year after that. At this time he was put in 4th grade. We had trouble within weeks, mostly with not wanting to do the work. He was still a very good reader and read quite a bit. Then, in 01/02, less than one quarter of the way through 5th grade he suddenly couldn’t read anymore. Let me describe this situation to you. He couldn’t read anymore because he was suddenly a sort of dyslexic, i.e. he was switching letters around in the words, he was adding letters that weren’t in the words and he was leaving letters out. Quite obviously he couldn’t understand what he was reading as he’d never heard the words he was coming up with!

“Frankly I realized that this could be devastating. If he couldn’t read he wouldn’t be able to learn much else in life. If he could read he had the world at his disposal. So I started defining words on him. He would use MILLIONS of sentences, draw pictures as well as demonstrate the definitions for me. No kidding, 30 minutes later he would have no clue what the word meant again. So I panicked and hired a tutor for J. This turned out to be only a little better than a waste of time.

“When I got the Summer Program flyer back in May I got really excited about the prospect that I could send J. to the Mojave Academy and maybe get him ‘fixed’. J. went out for the full two-month summer program and he asked (begged) me to allow him to go back to finish his program.

“He came home on October 11. Hear this and hear this well…this J. can READ again! He not only correctly pronounces the words, he has a much larger vocabulary AND he no longer has any of the signs of ‘dyslexia’ at all. If J. can read - he can learn and do anything in life!

“Thank you all for all your hard work! This boy can read again!”
